What was once looking like a massive box office bomb, Sonic the Hedgehog underwent an extensive special effects makeover to become the second highest-grossing film of 2020. Of course, the fact that theaters shut down shortly after the film's release has something to do with that. Still, $306 million at the worldwide box office is nothing to scoff at.

Paramount Pictures isn't turning their back to everyone's favorite blue, chilidog-craving hedgehog any time soon. The studio announced that a sequel is in the works on Thursday. Director Jeff Fowler and screenwriters Pat Casey and Josh Miller would all be returning. However, they made no formal announcement about whether or not the cast, which includes Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as Sonic, would be returning. Fans clamoring to see what will become of Sonic's friend Tom, played by James Marsden, will just have to wait.

Fowler proudly shared the announcement on Twitter yesterday afternoon.

Sonic the Hedgehog became an unlikely hit earlier this year. The film, which underwent extensive retooling following a fan backlash to Sonic's original, which featured a more "realistic" interpretation of this talking hedgehog, has since become the highest-grossing video game movie ever.

While the rest of the cast has not officially been announced, Ben Schwartz, who voiced Sonic in the film, shared news of the sequel on Twitter. Though he's expected to return, things can always change. After all, Sonic originally had human teeth in this movie before someone had the bright idea to make him look like a cartoon character because Sonic is a cartoon character.
