Video footage of the incident, a tweet commenting on it, and a photograph of Rudy Giuliani.

Rudy Giuliani, former mayor of New York City and former personal attorney to Donald Trump, received a slap on the back while at a grocery store yesterday, and then claimed he was assaulted.

The slapper, a 39-year-old Staten Island resident, allegedly gave Giuliani the slap on the back, said “What’s up, scumbag?” and then criticized Giuliani’s support of the overturning of Roe v. Wade before walking away. The incident was captured on video, which subsequently went viral online.

Andrew Gill (the man who slapped Giuliani) was arrested and charged with assault of a person over 65, a felony in New York state, which, if Gill is convicted, would lead to two to seven years in prison. Giuliani described the impact of the slap as “like a boulder” or a “gunshot” in remarks following the incident.

After seeing the footage, many people online thought Giuliani was exaggerating the force of the so-called "slap" and posted mocking memes.

Many made fun of the former Mayor, bringing up crimes he has been accused of in the past and harmful lies he has endorsed during his political career.

A few just found the story hilarious, the latest chapter in the very-online career of a highly memed politician.

The person most responsible for spreading the video seems to be Ron Filipowski, a former Republican prosecutor turned liberal-leaning pundit on Twitter. Filipowski shared a video of the incident, which gained over 3.2 million views, and has tweeted several times about the response to the clip.

At the time of the incident, Rudy Giuliani was campaigning for his son Andrew, who is running in the Republican primary for Governor of New York. Andrew struck a defiant tone in tweets published earlier today.
