Ash, Misty and Brock in Pokemon Mewtwo Strikes Back Evolution

Not to be outdone by the competition, Netflix has entered the remake arena with Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back--Evolution, a computer-generated remake of 1998's Pokémon: The First Movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back. Mewtwo Strikes Back hits Netflix on February 27th.

The film sees the classic Pokémon gang with a fresh, somewhat chonky CG look--hence the Evolution moniker. As far as we can tell, the plot is largely the same: The man-made Pokémon Mewtwo escapes the lab and attempts to take over the world.

Mewtwo Strikes Back--Evolution is a step in the opposite direction from last year's Detective Pikachu, which took a Who Framed Roger Rabbit approach to the series, mixing live-action and animation. Pikachu brought in $430 million worldwide and received a mixed response from critics and fans.

However, the Evolution branding does allude to other possible remakes. Will Netflix slap "Evolution" on_ Pokemon the Movie 2000_ or Pokémon the Movie: I Choose You!? It wouldn't be that surprising, given the success Disney has had with their "live-action" remakes of Aladdin and "The Lion King":/memes/subcultures/the-lion-king-2019-film, as well as the age-old tradition of remaking video games with modern effects and gameplay.

We'll have to see how successful Mewtwo Strikes Back is before speculating about other remakes or maybe even a direct sequel. "Mewtwo Strikes Back Strikes Back" does have a certain elegance to it.
