Netflix and Ubisoft are developing Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell into a two-season, 16-episode animated series. The series will be written and executive produced by Derek Kolstad, the writer behind the John Wick films. The news was broken by Variety yesterday afternoon.

The series marks the latest expansion of the Splinter Cell franchise, which has seen seven games and several novels. The series follows black ops agent Sam Fisher. Rumors of a live-action Splinter Cell have circled since 2012, when it was rumored Tom Hardy was attached to the project, but the project is considered inactive.

The move constitutes another move into the realm of video game adaptations for Netflix, which currently has series for Cyberpunk 2077 and Dragon's Dogma in development. Netflix is currently streaming the Castlevania anime as well.

The news raised eyebrows from fans, with some fans excited and others disappointed that the news isn't about another game in the series.
