Here's Why Joker Doesn't Say 'We Live In A Society' In The Snyder Cut

If you made it to the end of Zack Snyder's four-hour epic Zack Snyder's Justice League, which premiered on HBO Max yesterday, you were probably a little confused. The final few minutes, an epilogue containing a dream sequence and Martian Manhunter, you were treated to a little conversation between Batman and the Joker, set against the barren ash of a world destroyed by Superman, presumably.

The why should be confusing, but not the where. The trailer for the film makes it very clear that Joker situates the audience in a location. "We live in a society," he says. In the finished film, however, we're given no such information, an afront to the Gamers who were planning on rising up in response to Joker's utterance.

The disappointment could be felt throughout the universe, much like how Superman's cries could be felt in the Amazon, signaling the awakening of the "Mother Boxes." The movie is long.

But as the hype washes away following the movie's premiere, both Snyder and Jared Leto, who reprised the role as Joker, are weighing in on the line and how it ended up in the movie. Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert last night, Leto revealed that the line was an "ad-lib that ended up in the trailer." Additionally, he announced that his band 30 Seconds to Mars was selling "We Live in a Society" t-shirts with 50% of the profits going to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Snyder, more or less, confirmed Leto's telling of things. During reshoots, he told The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder said that the pair went back and forth about the line, but ultimately, he gives credit to Leto.

Using the line definitely seemed to work, putting more attention on the new version of a film that most people didn't really like that much. But from the perspective of a meme website, the movie could've used a few more meme references. And another thing, how come Batman doesn't dance anymore? Remember the Batusi?
