Actor, writer and director Jennette McCurdy, famous for playing Sam Puckett on the Nickelodeon channel show iCarly from 2007 to 2012, has written a memoir that’s making waves online.
The book, titled I’m Glad My Mom Died, tells the story of McCurdy and her abusive mother who pushed her into acting and traumatized her for years. It also describes abusive dynamics on the set of iCarly, including an individual referred to in the book as “the Creator” who many believe is showrunner Dan Schneider, allegedly giving child actors alcohol and touching them inappropriately. McCurdy opens up about her troubles with anorexia and alcoholism as well.
There shouldn’t be no Jennette McCurdy discourse tbh – just endless support. I need y’all to look beyond the parenting you were raised under and realize that not everyone had a good mom that’d be worth mourning.

Since it debuted over the weekend, many online reacted supportively to McCurdy, empathizing with her experiences and sharing their own stories about abuse.

The title shocked a few, but as McCurdy explained in an interview, “I think anybody who has experienced parental abuse understands this title, and I think anybody who has a sense of humor understands this title, and I’m not so concerned about the opinions of anybody else.”
Child actress Jennette McCurdy in her first on-camera interview about her memoir, ‘I’m Glad My Mom Died’:
“Anybody that has experienced parental abuse understands this title… I wouldn’t have written the book if my mom were alive. I would still have my identity dictated by her.” pic.twitter.com/oqREJKx719— The Recount (@therecount) August 9, 2022
Supporters of McCurdy online shared their reactions to the book with a slew of memes and videos, particularly on Twitter.

The most attention-grabbing part of the book for some was McCurdy’s take on working at Nickelodeon and for Dan Schneider as a child actor. According to her memoir, Nickelodeon purportedly offered her $300,000 never to speak publicly about her experiences, which she refused.
Excerpts of the book shared across Twitter featured passages that describe allegations of creepy behavior on set and alcohol abuse. Notably, McCurdy did not join the 2021 reboot of the show.
i hope jennette mccurdy’s memoir alone is enough to launch a major investigation on dan schneider and the entire nickelodeon team this shit genuinely needs to result in prison time.

this part in jennette mccurdy’s book reminds me of when avan jogia said in a tiktok he doesn’t remember filming victorious at all because he was either drunk or hungover while filming, how dan schneider and his associates aren’t in jail yet is beyond me pic.twitter.com/rxXXaaDZHW

In Jennette McCurdy’s new memoir she reveals that a producer on the set of iCarly she was “photographed in a bikini at a wardrobe fitting and being encouraged to drink alcohol by an intimidating figure she simply calls the Creator.”

A passage describing the ways in which McCurdy was led to resent fellow child actor Ariana Grande also gained a lot of attention online. Some defenders of Grande then criticized McCurdy, but many argued for the Ariana Grande stans to stand down.
If you’re more focused on what Jennette McCurdy had to say about Ariana Grande than the fact that she was physically and emotionally abused by both her mother and Dan Schneider….perhaps you’re missing the main point of her book.

Jennette McCurdy does a good job talking ab her resentment towards Ariana Grande in her book, without vilifying AG.
Jennette had not processed many things – her anger, mother's abuse, horrible relationships, ED & more.

The memoir is currently selling well in addition to its social media virality, and McCurdy has said she's doing a press promotion tour for it in the near future.
