Chris Pratt, once a lovable comedy oaf who has spent the past decade transitioning into a voice acting menace, has many Mario fans on edge after promising that his voice for Nintendo's lovable plumber in the upcoming Mario film will be unlike "anything we've ever heard before."

In an interview with Variety yesterday, Pratt said, "I worked really closely with the directors and trying out a few things and landed on something that I’m really proud of and can’t wait for people to see and hear… I’m providing a voice for an animated character, and it is updated and unlike anything you’ve heard in the Mario world before."

This was likely intended to calm people who were anxious that Pratt's Mario voice will undoubtedly be a far cry from the iconic voice given to the character by Charles Martinet for dozens of years, but it proved to do quite the opposite. Instead, it triggered alarm bells for many people wondering how the very American Pratt was going to approach the caricatured Italian in an "updated" and brand new way.

While many expressed disbelief that Pratt could really bring something unexpected to the role, others held out optimism, knowing that, while Mario is known mostly for his voice provided by Martinet, other actors have tried their hands at Nintendo's plumber over the years.

We're still an unspecified amount of time away from when the trailer and official title for Chris Pratt's Mario movie drops, but one thing is for certain: We will not be living in the same world post-trailer as the world we live in now.
