The men's and women's triathlons have run the past two days at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and while there are likely few people who could tell you they remember who won the races, there are likely many more who could tell you about the giant Gundam in the middle of the course.
This was thanks in large part to a BBC commentator absolutely butchering the word "Gundam," pronouncing it "Gandum," live on the air.
this is the best sports commentary ive ever heard pic.twitter.com/hJyMBc8bDE

"It's some sort of famous robot," says the commentator rather dismissively. "The robot Gandum." He also called it "Gandum, the unicorn robot." He was technically correct there, as the statue is from Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn.
here it is (og tweet wasnt 100% correct…but close) pic.twitter.com/DmTLSGSgaM

The Gundam has been the literal biggest star of the Olympics for a certain demographic of Olympics watchers.
Love Live has made it into the Olympics,

Seems unfair to the other competitors but good luck to Gundam I guess. #Triathlon #Olympics pic.twitter.com/OasvAnQoRK

Nothing made me squeal with absolute joy than seeing the giant Gundam statue during the #Triathlon at #Tokyo2020 #Olympics pic.twitter.com/cyoDUVTVYX

visiting my parents and my well-intending step father walked up to me, held out his phone to show me something and said in his very thick german accent: "you know him?" and it was the footage of those olympic cyclists riding past the gundam statue

After the opening ceremony's video game soundtrack, it's safe to say this has been the nerdiest Olympics of all time.
