Over the weekend, the mysterious monolith in Utah which befuddled internet users for a week disappeared, with no one knowing who took it or where it went. Now, another monolith very much like the one in Utah has popped up in Romania of all places.

The structure was found on Doamnei Hill in the city of Piatra Neamţ two days before the Utah monolith disappeared, so while it is not the same monolith, it is identical, meaning someone with a lot of money, global connections, and monoliths is going around planting them in the ground.

"We have started looking into the strange appearance of the monolith. It is on private property, but we still don’t know who the monolith’s owner is yet. It is in a protected area on an archaeological site," said Neamţ Culture and Heritage official Rocsana Josanu. "Before installing something there, they needed permission from our institution, one that must then be approved by the Ministry of Culture."

The mysterious monolith appearances are beginning to look like a viral marketing campaign, a very expensive ARG, or a very 2020 sign that we're doomed in hitherto unknown ways. Either way, the mystery behind the monoliths is fast becoming one of the weirdest stories of the year--which is no small feat.
